TURKU: Fiction Movie Farha (2021) Nakba Day screening

Fiction Movie Farha (2021) will be screened on the evening of Nakba Day 15th of May at Turku Book Cafe.

Farha (فرحة, joy or delight) tells a story based on real events from 1948, a period that Palestinians call the Nakba, the catastrophe. The film’s protagonist, 14-year-old Palestinian Farha, lives in a small village and dreams of attending school, defying tradition. As colonial violence escalates, Farha’s father locks his daughter in a small storage room to protect her. From within the dark space, Farha experiences and witnesses the life-altering events unfolding through only a small opening.

Farha is the first feature-length film by Darin J. Sallam, who is of Palestinian descent. It was Jordan’s submission for the Academy Awards in 2023.

The film screening will be held on Nakba Day, an annual commemoration of the Nakba. In 1948 and 1949 zionist forces murdered 15 000 Palestinians and drove 750 000 Palestinians to become refugees. Palestinians call this chain of events Nakba, the catastrophe. The memorial day of the Nakba is 15th of May each year. The opression of Palestinians and driving them away from their home land began earlier and is continuing to this day. However, Nakba is especially notable time in history.
