Helsinki: Evening of Experimental Theatre

Evening of experimental theatre organised by the Pahateatteri on Thursday, September 11, at 6 pm at Studio Magito, Suvilahti (Kaasutehtaankatu 1, Helsinki).

Experimentation, exploration, community, and play. Cryptic symbolism, risk-taking, the unfinished and the polished. Live music, dancing, something to eat, and something to drink. Artist interviews, lively chatter, friends – old and new – and an early autumn evening still shimmering with the warmth of summer, at least in spirit.

All this – and much more – is what Paha Theatre’s new event concept: An Evening of Experimental Theatre, is made of. Throughout the night, audiences will witness 12 different experimental short performances in a club-like setting, created by over 20 artists. Adding to the atmosphere, we’ll have live music played by the brilliant band Mauno, and DJ Ilmari will keep the party going with a dance set at the end of the night. The event’s host will act as a guide and friend, leading the audience through the evening, helping to clarify and deepen the experience. Between performances, the audience will get a rare chance to peek behind the curtain of a traditional theatre experience through direct Q&A sessions and discussions with the creators, led by the host.

In addition to the artistic content, the evening focuses on creating a laid-back space and atmosphere to have a relaxed and cozy evening together. During performances, doors will be closed to ensure focus – however, the audience is free to move around the space: change seats and perspectives, bring their own snacks and drinks, or purchase them at the venue. During the band and DJ sets, the main entrance will remain open. The evening begins at 18:00 and ends around midnight. A detailed schedule will be announced closer to the event.

This evening also aims to raise awareness and funds for an ongoing, urgent and vital human rights struggle. Half of all proceeds from the event will be donated to Sumud, the Finnish Palestine Network. Sumud is an intersectional organization working to end Israel’s apartheid, occupation, and colonialism, and to promote the human and political rights of Palestinians.

An Evening of Experimental Theatre is not just a collection of performances. It is a collective experience that invites everyone interested in experimental performing arts and shared values to become part of a community formed by performers and audience members – at least for one night.
